MPEA Board Will Propose Dues IncreaseThe MPEA Board of Directors, at its January meeting, voted unanimously to propose a dues increase to the members at the May 5 and 6, 2006 Annual Meeting. The proposal by the Board will increase the dues from $14 per month to $16 per month beginning the first payroll period of July 2006. The decision of the Board came after struggling with the budget at its January meeting. The decision is based on some real concerns by the Board and both retiring Executive Director Tom Schneider and new Executive Director Quinton Nyman about what’s going to happen with the retirement issues. There is a real possibility that MPEA may be thrust into major court battles to preserve the retirement benefits of all past, current and future members. This battle if it has to be fought in the courts could require many thousands of dollars to protect the billions of dollars of retirement benefits which are owing to our members. “This when coupled with the dramatic increases in postage, telephone, travel, building taxes, insurance and the 3.5 percent staff salary increase on January 1, 2006, and 4 percent on January 1, 2007, leave us with no other option,” the unanimous decision of the Board states. During discussion of the dues increase, Schneider pointed out that he went to work for MPEA full-time during the Forrest Anderson administration. When the late Governor ran for office his campaign slogan was “Pay More, What For.” Schneider said he has always tried to run the association with the same philosophy. “As a result,” he said, “MPEA’s dues are a quarter to one-third less than any other union in Montana. MPEA staff, for example, are members of the Laborers and their dues are $48 per month.” |
