Scholarships

Two $500 scholarships are awarded at the association’s Annual Meeting.

This year’s winners were Nicole Gustin of Billings and Anna Lee Stitt of Helmville.

The MPEA committee making the selections included Steve Allen from the Kalispell public assistance office; Travis Ross, a member of MPEA’s Missoula City/County Health Department; LeeAnne Gills, from the MSU College of Technology in Great Falls; and, Karlene Hagenbach, with the Billings office of the Department of Revenue.

Nicole will be attending the U of M in Missoula this fall as a pre-pharmacy major; she hopes to also minor in athletic training.

Nicole’s mom and her shared experiences played a decisive role in her selection of a major and minor. “It is through her experience working with the disabled and elderly population that I have learned about the necessity of providing access to quality health care for everyone. I am aware of the extreme shortages of qualified health care providers, including pharmacists, and I want to be a part of the solution to that problem,” Nicole wrote to the scholarship committee.

She has worked as a volunteer at the Montana Rescue Mission in Billings throughout high school at Billings Skyview where she has maintained a 3.8 grade point average. While at Skyview, Nicole has been in advanced math and science classes to help prepare for the academic life she will begin this fall. She has also held a job while attending high school.

Anna Stitt is the daughter of Diana Lee Stitt who is a member of MPEA’s Montana Public Employees Retirement Administration Chapter.

Anna is currently attending Carroll College in Helena where she is majoring in accounting. Anna is also attempting a double minor in spanish and business administration. She believes there will be a growing demand for accountants in Montana. But this Helmville native says she remains passionate about ranching and is hopeful that her accounting education will enable her to remain employed by rural Montana ranches.

Anna, who has provided thousands of hours of community service in the Helmville, Drummond and Helena communities, was among those selected by Carroll College for its Honor Scholars Program. Anna’s family lives off a low income so she has become responsible for all of her own expenses. Anna wrote that even though she works in the summer and works part time during the school year she fully anticipates a student loan debt of $41,000 by the time she graduates.
